Ebook About A pastor's wife's shattering yet ultimately hopeful story of her husband's death by suicide, her journey to understand mental illness, and the light she found in the darkness. On August 25, 2018, Kayla Stoecklein lost her husband, Andrew--megachurch pastor of Inland Hills Church in Chino, California--to suicide. In the wake of the tragedy, she embarked on a brave journey to better understand his harrowing battle with mental illness and, ultimately, to overcome the stigma of suicide.Fear Gone Wild is her intimate account of all that led to that tragic day, including her husband's panic attacks and debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression. Despite their deep faith in God and the countless prayers of many believers, Andrew was never healed of his illness. Turning to Scripture for answers, she discovered that God uses wilderness experiences to prepare His children--including Jesus--for his greater purpose and to work miracles inside our souls. With a clear-eyed acknowledgment of how misguided and misinformed she was about mental illness, Kayla Stoecklein shares her story in hopes that anyone walking through the wilderness of mental illness will be better equipped for the journey and will learn to put their hope in Jesus through it all.Book Fear Gone Wild: A Story of Mental Illness, Suicide, and Hope Through Loss Review :
As a former staff member of Inland Hills Church, I’m very familiar of the family dynamics that exist with the Stoeckleins. It’s very unfortunate that Andrew passed away, however mental illness wasn’t the only factor that contributed to his death. My heart truly goes out to Kayla and her grief. I have worked in mental health chaplaincy for years and seen the very things she described. Her courage to come forward and tell her story is remarkable bravery. She was miserably failed by a medical system that should’ve done more. I wish different steps would’ve been taken along the way to do extensive diagnostic tests and treat his symptoms. He should not have been allowed to stay at home and crawl into a dark hole in his room and fester in isolation. I wish he would’ve been admitted on a 5150 hold If not 5350 and referred to a long term psychiatric care home and paid by his health insurance. His behavior worsened over time and showed clear regression and deterioration. The several episodes of his panic attacks, profuse weeping, and him curled up in a fetal position warranted an immediate 911 call as this was a full blow crisis for which Kayla was not equipped to handle. The advise given to him a psychologist to go into his cave was malpractice on her part as that pushed him into isolation that exacerbated his symptoms. The psychiatrist who diagnosed him as low spectrum depression and threw pills to fix him and then to tell him he’’d be okay was poor clinical judgment. He should’ve been referred to case management and had another psychiatrist brought in to closely manage his care. The church leadership mishandled things along the way by not seeing the signs beyond possible spiritual warfare and putting him on a leave of absence earlier than they did and push for him to be referred for emergency evaluation with a likely referral to the state mental hospital . It should not have been left to Kayla to try to figure this out. His symptoms were becoming severe and he should not have been allowed to be at home. Again my heart goes out to Kayla. She was in an impossible situation and the care he truly needed didn’t happen. Always call 911 when someone is having recurring panic attacks at the level of acuity he was.
